Toyota Innova

Welcome to the land of the international car market. Welcome to the Toyota Innova, available worldwide under the imv platform, this new entrant in the Indian market, is also a new entrant in the world market. Cars such as the fortuner, Hilux also share the same bloodline, the IMV platform. Toyota has gone about their plan by making sure that components are either localized or manufactured in large numbers, both of which result in increased profits without any compromise on quality. Thus making sure that the product remains worthy of the Toyota brand. A brand associated with cars that are well worthy of outliving their owners. Not many cars of recent times have enjoyed the anticipation that the Innova has. It has replaced one of the best selling cars in the country. As a matter of fact, Innova seems to be the face of an all new mini van market, while also making sure that SUV, Taxi and sedan buyers take a close look

Coming to the car in question here, the Toyota Innova belongs to a breed of cars hardly seen in the market. The Innova is the fifth generation of the Toyota Kijang, while the outgoing model, the Qualis is two generations behind. It wishes to combine qualities like space and ruggedness associated with SUV's along with comfort and handling normally seen in high priced cars. An ambitious project, considering the fact that the Innova is here to replace the Qualis, a car that showed Indian manufacturers that quality works, even in a segment where most of the cars sold are used as taxis. Now that Toyota has decided to completely let go of the Qualis, we must have quite a car on our hands.

Design and engineering

The fact that the Innova is 2 generations ahead of the Quails can easily made out at first glance. The Innovas' contemporary design emphasizes the fact that it is designed to cater to the world market. The Innova doesn't feel like a compromise at all, it doesn't feel like those split personalities we encounter so often with cars in India. The clear ideas that emerged during the IMV project seems to have taken excellent shape, wheel arches are flared, but not pronounced enough to bother you, the car is high enough to dispatch of any speed bumps it might encounter, but well sprung enough that it could attack corners.

The Innova rides on a rigid tubular section chassis. It uses double wishbones with coil springs up front and the rear uses a non-independent suspension, with four links and a lateral rod with coil springs. The Innova is not available with a four-wheel drive option; need not be missed unless you wish to go for some serious off-roading. 15" tires add much character to the car and the wheel-well relationship couldn't have been better, not in India it couldn’t.

The real surprise though, is not outside. It’s the interiors of this new Toyota that will surprise you the most, Quality and feel never seen in its category. The interiors are essentially walnut finish and the seats are fabric the seats feel especially comfortable thanks to the good lumbar and under thigh support. A very thoughtful feature is the adjustable seat at the back, which can move back and forth. This feature can maximize rear seat space, especially if you are regularly driven around. Pockets integrated into the seats form perfect recesses for the seat belts and their clips to be tucked away. The Plastics used are of very high quality and will most definitely keep rattles at bay. The stereo is placed high for easy access and readability, an important safety feature skipped in most cars. Innovation seems to be the idea behind the entire design and engineering process.

Engine and transmission

The Innova is currently available with two engine options, The 2.0 litre 4-cylinder fuel injected petrol engine, featuring the VVT-i technology, in order to boost mileage and the more popular engine option, the 2.5 litres 4 cylinder turbocharged common rail direct injection diesel. Both mated to 5-speed manual transmission. We feature only details of the diesel engined version here, as the petrol version is yet to be tested.

The D4D motor was very impressive in terms of acceleration from standstill as well as roll-on, even when the temperature needle had barely started moving. Something that is still alien in most Indian diesels. If there was one word I can use to describe this diesel, its 'responsive'. Power is easily harnessed, and unlike other common rail diesels, the engine has lots of rev-range. The engine seems very relaxed and composed even at speeds just above 1300rpm and the torque seems relentless, all the way to 4500rpm, beyond which you do get a feeling of driving a diesel. Noise and vibrations associated with diesels seem to be from a bygone era, as far as this engine is concerned. Even low speed rattle, commonly associate diesel engines doesn’t enter into the passenger cabin.

The transmission is very well designed and is very capable of using the power of this diesel quite well. The gearshift is surprisingly short throw and the positioning of the shifter couldn't have been better. This car is capable of cruising with much composure, even at speeds exceeding 120Kph. The torquey engine also means that you need not shift too many times during your city runs.

Tata Pixel is new city car concept

Tata Pixel is new city car concept
Tata Motors has unveiled its next-generation city car concept, the Pixel. Unveiled at the 81st Geneva Motor Show by Ratan Tata, Pixel is a city car concept mainly developed for the European markets.
Based on the Nano, the Pixel is just over three metres in length and when it reaches India in three years from now, it will be up against the Maruti Alto. The rear-engined Pixel is powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo charged diesel motor. The company claims this low-friction design motor along with optimised aerodynamic drag, lowrolling-resistance tyres, stop-starttechnology and intelligent batterycharging, will be one of the cleanest vehicles running on European streets.
The design and engineering - thework of Tata’s in-house engineers - incorporates scissor doors and a large glass area, including a panoramic roof. The car’s neatest engineering trick is a system which helps the outer rear wheel forwards and the inner rear wheel backwards when turning at acute angles. The set-up gives the Pixel a turning radius of just 2.6 metres.
Speaking on the occasion, Carl-Peter Forster, MD and CEO, Tata Motors, said, “Tata Motors holds true to its belief that there is an opportunity in Europe for a city car, which is optimal in space, manoeuvrability and environment-friendliness. The Tata Pixel is a reflection of Tata Motors’ idea of what such a car should be.”

Volvo to ditch premium tag

Volvo must abandon its quest to be considered ‘premium’ and come up with a new strategy, according to the firm’s recently installed boss, Stefan Jacoby.
The Swedish manufacturer is re-evaluating its product plan in the wake of its takeover by Chinese firm Geely. Jacoby believes it needs to stop chasing the ‘premium’ market high ground currently held by BMW, Audi and Mercedes.
“Let’s ditch this talk about premium,” said Jacoby. “It sounds like a pricing strategy and it’s got an expensive ring to it. We need to focus on elegant Scandinavian simplicity, our own unique identity, and not copy our competitors.”
Jacoby is targeting 800,000 sales per year by 2020, more than double the 380,000 units that Volvo expects to sell in 2010. He says that re-establishing the firm’s strength in the US market will be a crucial part of his plan.
“We have lost ground in the US,” explained the Volvo chief exec. “We are at the bottom, looking up.”
Volvo recently launched its compact SUV XC60 in the Indian market. The company also sells its S80 saloon as well as XC90 large SUV in India; it is soon going to launch its S60 saloon which will compete with the likes of Mercedes C class and BMW 3-series saloon.

Rolls-Royce on a roll in India

Rolls-Royce on a roll in India
Super luxury marque Rolls-Royce has big plans for India. As Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO, Rolls Royce Motor Cars revealed on his visit to Mumbai, India is one of the strong growth markets for the manufacturer.
The year 2010 saw the car makersell 80 units of the Ghost and Phantom in India, a growth of nearly 600 percent compared to its 2009 sales. Müller-Ötvös is confident that Rolls-Royce will be able to improve on this figure and sell over a hundred cars in 2011.
Globally too, Rolls-Royce has seen a boost in its sales numbers. An improving global economic scenario along with the introduction of the Ghost has allowed the manufacturer to sell a record 2711 cars in 2010.
Müller-Ötvös stated the Ghost has been extremely well received and has brought many first time buyers into the Rolls-Royce family. The Ghost accounts for 65 percent of Rolls-Royce sales in India, while the remainder comesfrom the larger Phantom. Interestingly, the Ghost contributes to three quarters of Rolls-Royce’s global sales.
Rolls-Royce is studying the prospect of expanding its dealer network. At present, there is a dealer each in Mumbai and New Delhi. Rolls-Royce is keen to add at least two more dealers in India. Müller-Ötvös hinted one could be in the north, possibly in Punjab, and the other in the south.
Müller-Ötvös also spoke about the102EX, a fully electric powered Phantom that will be displayed at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. He described the car as a one-off research model and said there were no plans to put it into production.

Maruti Suzuki to launch Kizashi on Feb 2

Maruti Suzuki India will be launching its sedan Kizashi on February 2. According to reports, the vehicle, to be imported fully from parent Suzuki’s facility in Japan, will be positioned between the likes of Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. These cars are priced around Rs. 12 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh.

The company will consider the option of assembling the Kizashi in India in future if the demand justified but declined to give a time-frame. Kizashi is powered by a 2.4 litre petrol engine and will be available in both manual and automatic transmission options and will be formally launched on February 2, adds report.

2011 Kia Sorento

 2011 Kia Sorento

Previously an also-ran within its competitive class, the 2011 Kia Sorento has lost its truck-based platform and is now one of the most comfortable-riding and powerful compact SUVs. It’s even giving class leaders, like the Toyota RAV4, a run for their money. The Sorento has an optional third-row seat (rare in this class), class-leading warranties, and impressive standard features like Bluetooth.
Kia estimates its fuel economy at 21/29 mpg city/highway. This is about average for the class, but it’s quite good considering that the Sorento can accommodate up to seven passengers. In fact, few seven-passenger SUVs cost less or net more miles per gallon than the Sorento. And even fewer can touch its 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

2011 Infiniti M

2011 Infiniti M Starting Price: $46,250 Incentives: 2.9% APR for up to 60 months on M37 trims; Expires 6/30/10Long overshadowed by rivals like the BMW 5-Series, the Infiniti M has never received much attention. But it’s a different story for 2011 -- Infiniti has redesigned the M, and it’s now one of the best-performing full-size luxury sedans. The new model adds more power, sharper handling, and more luxurious interior materials. It also boasts a new look that’s difficult to ignore. Some reviewers love the look, while others think it’s hideous. Either way, the 2011 M is sure to get you noticed. The M is also big on technology. Its suite of high-tech safety features include a blind spot warning system that will actually take over steering in order to avoid a collision. There’s also a class-exclusive, optional “Forest Air” system that varies the vent fan speed in order to replicate the effects of a breeze. Engineers say it can even detect and neutralize cabin odors.

2011 Nissan Leaf

2011 Nissan Leaf Starting Price: $32,780 (before up to $7,500 in federal tax savings) Available for reservation (starting May 15, with delivery in December 2010)When the Nissan Leaf hits the streets, it will be the first mass-produced all-electric vehicle -- and it even comes with a relatively affordable price (and is eligible for tax credits on top of that). The Leaf runs on an electric motor powered by a massive battery pack which can be charged by a standard 220-volt home outlet or a quick-charging station. The Leaf can travel up to 100 miles on a full charge -- more than most people drive in a single day. It’s a four-door hatchback and seats up to five passengers, so you can use the Leaf as a family car. Since it doesn’t require gasoline, it is inexpensive to operate and should be ideal for commuters, too. According to Nissan, based on national average electricity rates, the Leaf should only cost three dollars to charge. Plus, initial test drives show that this electric vehicle drives just as well as any car, with smooth acceleration and braking.

Volkswagen Polo Road Test

Volkswagen Polo Road Test
The success of the Indian Polo is a very big deal for Volkswagen. On the crisply styled shoulders ofthis all-new hatchback rests not just the weight of its own future, but the hopes of VW in India. If the Polo is a hit, it will give the company the scale it needs for a faster payback on its huge investments in India. It will makeselling other VW models easier and establish the German automaker as a volume player in India. Whichever way you look atit, the Polo is a car the German auto giant just has to get right. There’s been no lack of effort forsure. While getting the Polo’s price right was priority number one, the car has also been considerably re-engineered with lots of changes to suit Indian customer requirements and pockets.
On paper the Polo looks a winner – German build quality, engineering, comfort and legendary attention to detail, all at a reasonable price. But has VWsacrificed too much in its quest to price this car aggressively, hasthe car lost some of its character,is it good enough to make us rule out other premium hatchbacks? It’s only a grueling road test that can give all the answers.

Honda City

Honda Siel Cars India will recall its City saloon to replace a faulty part in the valve train. The Japanese car maker has announced that it would carry out preventive part replacement of the lost motion spring in the valve train for 57,853 units of the City manufactured from November 2008 to December 2009.
The third generation Honda City requires a change of lost motion springs, which are compressed by rocker arms in normal engine use. These springs may bend or break overtime resulting in abnormal engine noise and potentially causing engine stalling and problems in re-starting.
Honda will carry out the replacement free of cost and the company will communicate directly with owners of the affect cars. Honda has also created a special microsite on its Indian website that enables the customers to check whether their cars are affected.
Honda is carrying out the replacement as part of a global exercise by Honda Motor Company to ensure stringent quality standards for its products.

Volvo XC60

In Sweden, it is hip to be square. This is a cultural thing. Simple but clever cubist shapes dominate their designs and straight lines and bold curves are beautifully used. And the designs work. Furniture company IKEA is a massive success all over the world and Volvo gets the same respect as car makers from Germany. But not in India. There is no IKEA centre here and for every Volvo sold, at least 10 other Indians opt for various other German cars. Of course, this relative lack of success is not all down to the straight lines and Volvo’s saloon, the S80, actually looks quite nice from the rear. Still, a little more aggression and a little less ‘play it safe’ in the design of the cars could do wonders.

This then, the far-from-understated new Volvo XC60 could be just the medicine. Yes, there are plenty of Volvo design cues carried over. The grille has a diagonal chrome strip in it, the strong shoulder line is present, and the very attractive XC90-like tail-lights, now with LEDs, are a sure Volvo giveaway. But instead of safe lines and boxy stand-up proportions comes an altogether new stance. The design is tipped forward, the detailing of the chin is very aggressive and the skinning of the car is tightly stretched and muscular. The car looks stunning in the flesh, even better than in pictures, and it’s pretty individualistic too. The XC60 gets smoked-out rear windows, a rub strip around the bottom and luscious big alloys that give it a well-planted stance.

Under the skin, this Volvo shares mechanical bits with the Land Rover Freelander, both using the P24 platform developed for Ford’s now- defunct Premier Automotive Group. As expected, a super-stiff chassis and independent suspension take care of dynamics and, as ever, this car has more autonomous and intelligent safety systems than a nuclear submarine. Even Volvo, ever bashful, says this is its safest car ever. And the great thing is that the safety features are all available in India. Even though this car is a crossover, more high estate than SUV, Volvo will position the XC60 as a compact SUV, placing it next to the Q5 and the X3. But that’s alright because the XC60 can play the SUV well too. Ground clearance is an impressive 230mm, there is an on-demand four-wheel-drive system from Haldex and you get a hill descent system that, in addition, works in reverse too.

Many cars look impressive at a distance. You love the styling, get drawn in and then come in for a closer look. Sometimes however, closer examination proves to be disappointing. This is certainly not the case here as the Volvo’s build is impeccable. It feels tough, solidly built and large, standing on its tall suspension and it has a genuine luxury product vibe about it. The precision with which the doors close just has to be experienced.

There are acres of space on the inside and the cabin looks very inviting as well. There’s plenty of piano-lacquered wood, beveled brushed aluminium frames and beautifully double- stitched two-tone leather seats that make you want to touch them. They are so inviting that I step right in, just to see how comfortable they are. Now Volvo is famous for making super-safe cars, Volvo is famous for being understated and Volvo is famous for making cars that last forever. What the company is not famous for, at least in India, is simply brilliant seats. It should be, because these are some of the finest seats I’ve sat in. They are supportive in the right places, feel like they are one size larger than normal and they are even brilliant to look at. And there’s plenty of legroom in the rear of the car, enough for a six-footer to sit behind a six-footer and be comfortable. As with other Volvos of this generation, some low-rent plastics look out of place and the functionality of some of the parts is poor. The array of buttons can get confusing, it’s easy to mix up the knobs, and why does the automated hatch work in slow motion?

You don’t expect to extract much driving pleasure from behind the wheel of this behemoth in the traditional sense, but very soon an impression of invincibility shines through. For a start, the thick wood- rimmed steering wheel feels very special. And it’s not just the wheel. The steering is beautifully weighted, the XC60 muscles its way down the road impressively, and in ‘comfort’ mode the dampers and widely spaced suspension towers absorb all sorts of rough patches and craters without too much deviation of the car. Yes, there is a layer of stiffness and you are apprised of the condition of the road quite often, especially if there are some coarse sections present, but large bump absorption is so good that you just tend to drive over bad bits without really slowing down.

In ‘comfort’ mode though, the XC60 does roll a fair bit. Take a couple of corners quickly – this car encourages you to do this – and you feel uncomfortable as body control feels loose. However, hit the ‘sport’ button and things tighten up considerably. The big Volvo turns into corners with plenty of enthusiasm, straight-line stability and braking inspire even more confidence and you can really carry a lot of speed into a corner. Closer examination of this Volvo reveals why this system is so effective; it’s a semi-active setup that adjusts the shocks upto 500 times a second.

This is no BMW X3 and you can’t term the handling as chuckable but it’s not dull to drive either. Also, while the Volvo is relatively easy to manoeuvre in traffic, it is a large car that often shows its bulk, especially when you are trying to squeeze into gaps in traffic.

What’s slightly disappointing is the D5 diesel under the hood. Performance is up to par, 0-100kph comes up in under 10sec and this car pulls consistently hard from anywhere in the powerband. But the twin-turbo unit gets a bit vocal at the top of the power band,. feels strained and not very happy to rev either. So you tend not to ask it to deliver maximum performance. And the six-speed auto, though perfectly capable for normal commute, feels a bit slow-witted when pushed hard. Clearly, this car is for covering miles and miles at a quick but not rapid pace.

What sets the XC60 apart from its other siblings is that it is a hugely appealing car, one that pulls at your heartstrings. It offers something different from the more conventional appeal of SUVs like the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5 and that, for Volvo, is an advantage. The XC60 is beautifully finished, has the ability to go off tarmac, drives and steers well and is jammed tight with cutting-edge safety features. It is massive (very important in our market), gives the impression of delivering more car for your rupee, and its insides are both robust and plush at the same time. Volvo will offer a two-year/60,000km warranty with all scheduled services provided free

Volvo S60 First Drive

When you think of a luxury car, the name Volvo rarely springs to mind. That’s because the Swedish car maker has, at best, been a marginal player in the small but rapidly growing premium car segment in India that’s completely monopolised by German brands. It’s not that Volvo doesn’t make good cars. The clever XC90 and comfy S80 are highly capable models but in the upper reaches of the Indian car market; it isn’t what’s under the skin that’s important but the skin (and the badge) that is. Safe and solid but a bit boring is what Volvos have been stereotyped as. Though Volvo is proud of the first two attributes and will hang onto them dearly, it desperately wants to change the boring bit and give the brand the energy to take on the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes.  Central to the Volvo’s image makeover is the newly launched S60 saloon which the company is touting as the first of a new breed of sexy and sporty saloons to come out of Gothenberg. In fact, Volvo has gone so far to say that it’s the sportiest saloon the company has ever made.
The S60 is critical for Volvo’s fortunes in India too. This is the car Volvo is banking on to catapult it from the fringes of oblivion into the thick end of the entry level luxury car segment dominated by the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and the Merc C-class. Volvo currently sells cars only in double digits a year, so if the S60 can even make a small dent in the stronghold of this German triumvirate it could give Volvo a plenty-fold increase in sales.
To achieve that end, the S60’s styling is a great starting point. The design has a hard-to-miss dynamism and the highlight  is the coupe-like profile along with the flowing C-pillar that extends all the way back to the tail-lamps. Another interesting design element is the pronounced shoulder line which has a double wave extending from the headlamps back to the rear lights. The S60 looks absolutely stunning from the front and yet every bit a Volvo, which until now was a contradiction in terms. The aggressive nose with swoopy headlamps and distinctive ‘marker’ lights is hard to miss. The skid plates under the front and rear bumpers give the S60 a tough-looking stance that’s intrinsic in every Volvo. The understated A4 looks delicate in comparison. Indian customers should take to the S60’s extrovert, Scandinavian styling which is refreshingly different from the Teutonic designs that are now quite commonplace.
The S60’s interior isn’t quite as enticing as its exterior and is typically understated. However, there’s a nice logic to the minimal style with large dials and well located controls. The ventilation controls with Volvo’s trademark humanoid figure are really easy to use but the dials for the temperature and audio system are so similar that they are easy to confuse for each other. The ‘floating’ centre console, typical of Volvos, is quite unique and, apart from being quite stylish, is practical too with useful storage space behind it.
Comfort is the S60’s forte. Though you sit quite low both in the front and back, the seats are large and extremely comfortable. Legroom is generous all around and in terms of interior space the S60 has the measure of its German rivals. However, the rear is best for two passengers because the seat with its pronounced contours has two buckets which makes long drives unpleasant for the middle passenger.
Though interior quality is of a very high order and the cabin feels very plush with superb materials, it doesn’t have the richness of the 3 Series or A4, whose plastics and switchgear feel a notch better. What the S60 does have is lots of equipment and it sets a new standard for safety in this class with innovative features like Pedestrian Detection (see ‘Under the skin’ box) which will be standard even on the India-spec S60.
The S60 will be launched in India with just two engine options. The D5 diesel is the same unit that powers the XC90 and S80 but it’s the petrol motor that promises class-leading performance. And how! The petrol S60, badged T6, will blow away a BMW 330i with its 3-litre, turbocharged, inline-six cylinder motor that belts out 304bhp and a massive 44.8kgm via a six-speed gearbox. It is four-wheel drive too and hence is more than a match for the 3.2 V6 A4 Quattro. But how does it drive?
Like most turbos, the T6’s strong mid-range is the talking point of this engine but what’s also good is the way the boost builds up nice and early in the rev band. The result is a linear strong shove in the back and enough pace to fly past all its German ◊ ∆ rivals. Though the Volvo turbo-petrol doesn’t rev as freely as a BMW straight six, it is seriously quick with a claimed a 0-100kph of time of just 6.5 seconds and a top speed of 250kph. For a car with so much power and sporting pretensions, the auto transmission is a bit of a letdown. It’s not very enthusiastic and there are no paddle shifts, so manual operation is done with the old-school prod of the gear lever. In ‘sport’ mode, the gearbox is more responsive and it kicks down quite quickly but you need to adopt a relaxed driving style to enjoy this car.
The D5 diesel is a 2.4-litre, five-cylinder unit developing a healthy 205bhp which again gives it more grunt than most of its rivals. This is obvious the instant you flex your right foot and the S60 diesel always feels it has a surplus of power and torque. The company claims a 0-100kph time of 7.8sec, which puts it ahead of the 320d and C220 CDI. But again, this engine doesn’t seem as finely honed as the ones from Germany. It sounds a bit gravelly and falls a tad short on refinement, the slow gearbox exaggerating its boomy nature.
On the twisty roads around Verona, the S60 had a chance to display its sporting ambitions. The steering has lots of feel and with 2.6 turns, lock to lock is very quick. In fact it’s a touch too quick and you often find yourself adjusting your line into a corner. But once you get used to the helm, the S60 can be hurled around like no other Volvo and the four-wheel-drive T6 just bites the road especially when exiting corners. But is it a 3 Series? No, it doesn’t have the BMW’s chassis balance or body control and the nose-heavy S60 has a tendency to understeer but the flipside is a ride so plush that it makes a 3 Series with its harsher rebound damping and run-flats feel like a bicycle. The chassis is ultimately tuned for comfort which, on Indian roads, is a good thing.
There’s an honesty about the S60 which gives it a certain charm. It won’t bowl you over with any flashiness or gimmicks but the impression you get is that it will be a pleasure to own. Unlike the German brands which hit your wallet harder than your heart, Volvos in India come with honest pricing and even more honest service. And that’s the point Volvo wants to make. Though prices are not announced yet, the fully loaded petrol T6 will retail for around Rs 26 lakh while the diesel D5 will cost around Rs 33 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). That’s astonishing value especially since the fully imported S60 undercuts its locally assembled rivals. True, the Volvo badge is still far from strong in the minds of Indian consumers but the S60 could be the game-changer the company has been waiting for

Bugatti Veyron Drive

My tryst with the Veyron started at the Autocar India Track Day earlier this year. Arriving a day late, I was informed that I had missed a chance of a lifetime. A Bugatti Veyron had been sneaked in at the Sriperumbudur track for Narain Karthikeyan to do a few storm-raising laps. A photograph of the Veyron on the track left no room for hiding from the truth. It was plain that I was never going to get a chance to see a Veyron again.
Little did I know then that it was all a prank set up by Renuka Kirpalani and Hormazd. They had a good laugh at the smooth little number they had pulled onme. So a few weeks later when an inviteto head down to Molsheim, the home of Bugatti, popped into my inbox, I couldn’t help but wonder if it was too good to be true.
Greater than the sum of all things
The Veyron is a legend. At the time of its launch in 2005, it was in a league of its own, thanks to its mind-numbing top whack of 408.47kph. The Veyron made history, but despite being backed by the might of the Volkswagen Group and Ferdinand Piech’s iron will, the journey wasn’t a very smooth one. Very nearly, it didn’t make it. Issues with aerodynamics, heat management, lack of power and excessive weight nearly brought an end to the Veyron story, early in the 21st century. Much too close to the launch, the Veyron project faced a watershed moment – make or break? Bugatti certainly broke the mould with the W16 engine. The motor boasted of an incredible 7993cc of displacement yet was very compact. Four turbos were added to churn out the necessary horsepower. A four-wheel-drive system was also a must to channelise all the 1001bhp. And 10 radiators are needed to keep all the mechanicals cool.
To make the Veyron as light as possible, it has been made up of lightweight alloys and carbonfibre. The chassis is carbonfibre as are most of the body panels (you could get a full carbonfibre body for some extra dough too), the panels that aren’t carbon fibre are aluminium, just like the engine and transmission, the bolts are titanium as are the front grilles over the air vents and the exhaust is magnesium like the wheels. The result is a supercar that weighs 1,888kg. The convertible Grand Sport version I was driving is heavier still at 1990kg. That is significantly heavier than the Enzo, the Zonda and even the Koenigsegg. Yet, the Veyron is faster than all of them. Then again, the Veyron is like no other car.
I nearly stopped dead in my tracks when I first saw the Veyron standing in front of me. In pictures it looks huge and gory but in the flesh it is another story. The Veyron, nose to tail, at 4.46 metres, is just a shade longer than the Honda City. The signature horseshoe grille seems like a puckered mouth, ready to swallow air hungrily. The wheel arches tower protectively over the hood. The headlamps look like lazy eyes, with a veiled alertness in the depths. The Veyron is one fluid form all the way to its chunky rear. The contrasting air intakes sticking out over the roof, the scooped-out section behind the doors, the massive rear wing and the sticky tyres give the Veyron a pantomine feel.
The feel carries over to the inside. The quilted, red leather interiors are fittingly dramatic. After dropping myself onto the slim seat hovering centimetres above the floor, my attention was taken up by the Veyron’s power meter. It is an rpm-like counter which shows how much horsepower you are using at a given point. Seeing the big 1001 at one end drove home the point, hard. I turn the key, press the start button and the engine crackles to life; time for some action.
I expected that my past experience with superbikes would keep me from getting blown away by the Veyron experience. A Hayabusa accelerates almost as fast as the Veyron till 100kph. The Veyron takes 2.5 seconds, the same as an F1 car but the Bugatti is the only one to have air-conditioning. At 100kph, the Veyron will only be getting warmed up. With the throttle pinned, it will continue to accelerate to 300kph from standstill in 16.7sec! Leave it be for another 40 seconds and it’ll be doing 400kph!
To some degree all those numbers helped acclimatise me to the absolute lunacy that was coming my way. Despite it all, the gap between my expectation and the reality was sufficient to leave me speechless. It seemed that my thoughts had fallen behind as we accelerated from standstill to 250kph. Even as we braked from 250 back to zero, they were still scampering to catch up and let me express myself. When they did, all I managed was, “Wooooow, insane!”
From the driver’s seat, an accelerating Veyron gives the impression of being the progeny of an airplane and a locomotive. Nothing can prepare you for the surprise that is the Veyron. Even the way it sounds is a surprise. It doesn’t have a supercar-like audio track. Charging down, it won’t shriek like a Ferrari, roar like a Lambo or emit beastly gurgles like an SLS. Prod the throttle and there’s just a massive sucking sound from the intakes. Once the turbos spool up, you get the feeling you are standing ahead of a jet engine going full blast.
Apart from the lack of a mandatory audio track, the Veyron doesn’t act like a supercar even in the way it gets the job done. The engine doesn’t need to be revved to get the best out of it. Sure it loves high rpms, but most of its massive 127.4kgm of shove is from a lowly 2200rpm. Mash the throttle in and you can feel the surge in power push the nose up ever so slightly as it pushes you back into your seat.
The Veyron gobbles up the tarmac busily. From the corner of my eyes, I watch the trees whizz by. It’s amazing how quickly the Veyron has inspired confidence. It doesn’t feel nervous, twitchy or ponderous. It isn’t pinsharp either. Yet, it is lithe and steady. The bumps that I feel through the steering wheel do nothing to throw us off course or make me lift off. The double wishbones with active hydraulic adjustment hunker down in handling mode. But, as we clunk over a rut, I can’t help but think that the Veyron owners in India will need to be ready to gnash their teeth as they drive over our desi crateresque roads.
No such worries for me as a longish corner appears, I tap the brakes lightly. Pull the paddle to shift down a cog on the seamless seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The jump in the rev counter needle and the roar of the intake noise is all that lets me know that the cogs have been swapped. The light, precise steering feels like a hi-tech laser instrument guiding the Veyron around the corner. Then I gun it again.
I mash the throttle more resolutely. This time it feels as though my stomach is planning to make a bid for freedom via the seat’s backrest. My heartbeat threatens to drown out the intake noise. The Veyron is still accelerating relentlessly, daring me to keep my foot down. I dart a glance at the power meter which reads 600-something. There are 300 more horses to go and I want to push a bit more. The next corner appears, sharpish and tree-lined. A vision of me signing a cheque for £ 1.2 million flutters briefly before my eyes, I dive on the brakes. A small panic attack surfaces as I realise just how much speed had built up in the few moments. The 400mm carbon brakes at the front bite down savagely, and surely. The trees around the corner suddenly don’t seem menacing anymore. I smile, amazed and thrilled at the Veyron’s incredible abilities. A new sense of respect grows with every blurred, twisted moment of this reality. The goose bumps never faded until the drive was well over.
The Veyron among many things is good, bad, ferocious and obedient. It could be called needless as well; an extravagance that can be indulged in by only a handful of people. It can be called a waste too. But the extravagance and the waste are nothing compared to what the Veyron truly is – a lofty, unattainable dream that was carefully, painstakingly created into an explosive reality.
